Connection URLs and the URL builder
Connect with a single URL such as postgresql://user:pass@host:5432/db. Build one with the interactive helper and see the exact format RowDex accepts.
Instead of filling in each field, you can paste one URL. In the connection form, switch Connection method from Standard to URL. RowDex fills in the host, port, user, database and SSL settings for you.
URL mode is available for PostgreSQL, Amazon Redshift, MySQL, MariaDB and Redis. MongoDB has its own Connection string mode, and SQLite uses a file path.
Try the URL builder#
Fill in the fields to see the URL for each engine. It runs in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere.
Formats#
postgresql://user:password@localhost:5432/mydb?sslmode=requiremysql://user:password@localhost:3306/mydb?ssl-mode=REQUIREDredis://:password@localhost:6379/0
rediss://:password@cache.example.com:6380/0mongodb+srv://user:password@cluster.xxxxx.mongodb.net/mydbWhat RowDex accepts#
| Engine | Schemes | SSL options in the URL |
|---|---|---|
| PostgreSQL | postgresql://, postgres:// | sslmode=disable|prefer|require|verify-ca|verify-full |
| Redshift | postgresql://, postgres://, redshift:// | sslmode=..., as for PostgreSQL |
| MySQL, MariaDB | mysql://, mariadb:// | ssl-mode=DISABLED|REQUIRED|VERIFY_CA|VERIFY_IDENTITY |
| Redis | redis://, rediss:// | rediss:// enables TLS; tls=true also works |
- The scheme must match the database type you chose. A
mysql://URL on a PostgreSQL connection is rejected with a clear message. - If you leave out the port, RowDex uses the engine's default: 5432, 5439 for Redshift, 3306 or 6379.
- For Redis, the path is the database number, so
/2selects database 2. - Once a URL connection is saved, the password is masked in the stored URL and kept in your OS keychain instead.
Special characters in passwords#
If a password contains characters such as @, :, /, ? or #, they must be percent-encoded in a URL, for example @ becomes %40. The builder above does this for you. If that sounds fiddly, switch back to Standard mode, where the password is typed as-is.
