Security and privacy
How RowDex handles your data: credentials in your OS keychain, local-first storage, signed installers, how the AI assistant and telemetry work, and safety features for production.
On this page
RowDex is a desktop app. Your databases are reached directly from your computer, so your data does not pass through RowDex servers.
Your credentials#
- Connection passwords are stored in your operating system's keychain, not in a plain-text file.
- They are not sent to RowDex servers.
- If you use your own AI provider, its API key is stored securely by the desktop app rather than in your preferences.
Your data stays on your machine#
Connection profiles, saved queries, query history, dashboards and schema information live on your computer. Query results go from your database to the app and nowhere else.
Encrypting the connection#
Use SSL/TLS to encrypt traffic to your database, and an SSH tunnel to reach private networks. Verify full is the strictest option. See SSH and SSL.
The AI assistant#
- It is optional. Nothing is sent unless you use it.
- It sends your question, recent conversation, schema notes and table and column names. It does not send your rows or results.
- With the free shared model that request passes through RowDex servers. With your own provider it goes straight from the app to that provider.
- It only drafts read-only SQL and never runs anything by itself.

What RowDex collects#
Your account email, billing details handled entirely by Paddle, and basic anonymized telemetry such as app version and operating system to improve reliability. It is not tied to your database content. The full and authoritative list is in the Privacy Policy.
Installers and updates#
Installers are signed, and notarized on macOS, and served over HTTPS. You do not need an account to download them.
Protecting production#
Read-only connections, the production flag and confirmation for risky statements make mistakes harder. See Safe mode.
